Book evaluation

For my book I did research on grid layouts looking at a range of magazines from the simple newspaper to my particular favourite ‘Interview magazine’. I was drawn to its bold text and colours and unique photo layouts.

I hand drew my front cover in an illustrative way, using my tag created in year 1 of the course as the title. The colours used in the front cover are used as base colours for text and blocks of colour throughout the book. The inspiration for these colours came from Picasso’s blue period colour scheme and my bathroom (my bathroom is bright orange), and the two compliment each other making the front cover striking.

I used the orange colour to highlight words throughout the book, I feel this aids the reader be drawn to the key words and titles and be able to find important information quickly.

This was my first time creating a book under a lot of stress as I am still not quite familiar with adobe 100%. I did what i could with my time given and my mental health condition to the best of my ability but I will be working behind the scenes on creating more books throughout the year to help me find my true style.

The layout of the images are simple yet effective, i wanted to try contain different sizes and positions for the photos to keep the book interesting as well as include some artists work and quotes.

I’m not entirely happy with the outcome but I think for a simple, smart collection of some of my work i have produced it well and clearly for the reader to skim through.

My folio i think i could of spent more time on. I was slightly rushed and kept changing the layout as well as having technical issues. I wanted to make the folio a darker colour to the book as its majority white. I think the black background accentuates some of my images more than the white in my book, allowing the shades to be highlighted more against a contrasting background. I kept using the main colours from my front cover throughout again but more so with titles and not text.
